I figured that I should start my own Manifesto for things that I've learned so far and to remember... I have more to put in it... but I can't think of them right now :]

Correct your weaknesses but amplify your strengths...

Sketch the hell out of sheets of paper until you finally know what it is that you're sketching...

Learn how to start using markers correctly even if you have to factor out eating food for a couple of days because your budget requires you to buy new makers once they go dry... including marker paper...

Work from the Inside and then the Outside... but don't get too lost in the engineering aspect of the design...

Don't shoot people down when they compliment you on your work...

Research, Research, RESEARCH...

Inspiration will find you, but it doesn't hurt to look for inspiration even when you feel like you don't need it...

It's called a twenty-minute power nap for a reason...

Focus... on anything... anywhere... as long as it's being productive...

-Final Presentation

-This is my Presentation Board which I re-edited after my class presentation.

Here is the intro that's on my board:

"Cirrus is a concept collapsible crutch that incorporates an innovative locking mechanism which allows the user to freely adjust their crutch to their particular needs. In order to use the crutch, the user must turn the handle slightly which then unlocks and releases the weighted extendable rod inside. The user will then return the handle to its normal locked positon. Afterwards, the forearm rest then slides up on a track and locks into place under the handle."

Finally, after a couple of weeks of working on this project, we were finally able to present our work to the class.

The design of my crutch was made to be collapsible. Throughout the development of my crutch, I focused on the collapsible part and the locking mechanism to make my crutch sturdy. What I'm really proud about is the locking mechanism which, I think, would be stable and safe if it were to be put into real world use. The locking mechanis

m and the extendable rod is what really made this crutch what it is. I wish that I could show it to you guys in real life though! Unfortunately though, there are some problems...

Design Problems:

- I really wanted to find a way to make the handle of the crutch collapsible aswell. Perhaps there could be a way to fold it or slide it into the cylinder?

- The forearm rest was a bit too wide and didn't cradle the arm in a safe and convincing way. This was due to the width of the gray cylindric

al part where the handle rested on. I had to figure out a way to let the forearm rest slide up and down without hitting the handle. BUT... after thinking about it, I could just cut the cylindrical part flush with the handle!

Overall, I'm happy with what I developed. And when I'm able to use the metalshop at my school, I will definitely be working on this project and making a few things better.

-Process

Here are the only process pictures that I can find. I honestly wish I brought my camera everywhere with me and took pictures of what I was doing with my crutch. But I

think most of my time was spent in the Laser Cutter room where I was able to get my desired pieces for my crutch. My favorite machine at the workshop right now would be the Mill, which I was able to use to make a sliding track for my forearm crutch.

This here is basically the locking mechanism that I incorporated into my crutch.

These lasercut pieces on acrylic are the parts that I used for my extendable rod. I ended up having to build my extendable rod piece by piece because I didn't know any possible way to machine the thing to my specifications.

Here is my extendable rod, sanded, and attached, piece by piece, by acrylic cement. My teacher mentioned that I do the hole in the middle so that it would be easy to attach the pieces together.

Here is part of my forearm rest which I was heatforming with the help of a paint can. I then had to use another PVC pipe of the same diameter to get the rest of the form up to shape.

Locking mechanism. The acrylic piece without the blue protective sheet is basically attached to the inner tube which is attached to the handle. The outer rings are attached to the outer tube of my crutch. And the extendable rod is the one in the center.

-Wooden Buck "Working Model"

Here is the wooden buck that our teacher assigned for us after we developed our foamcore models. For this one though, we had to really figure out how our crutch will actually work and how many components we will really have. I wish I had process pictures for this guy because it was really scary to make... My fingers were really close to the table saw when I was cutting the edges off to make the octagonal shape.

The wooden buck was supposed to be full-scale, but I missed a few marks and it was rather short to be used. But it did help me out A LOT in making my final final crutch model. Overall though, I learned quite a lot from the wooden buck and I was able to develop my final locking mechanism through it.

Components wise, the two discs and rods that you see on the outer part of the octagon (cylinder) is my locking mechanism for the extendable rod. It will be inside though for my final model.

Yes. That's how short and clunky my wooden buck was. The extendable rod at the bottom had these steps to it so that it would be able to be locked into place by the locking mechanism. Also, the top wooden part was my forearm rest.

Here I am trying to make sense of my Rhino render and 2D exploded-view drawings.

That's my awesome teacher. During this time he really helped me out in minimizing how many components there will be in my crutch.

I still didn't know what I was looking at... haha :p

Here are the fullscale sketches/renders of the form that I wanted my crutch to look like. My ergoform model on the top picture to the right is about 5'8" tall, so hopefully that will help you see how big these sketches are.

Foamcore Models

We had to develop foamcore models for this project to help us justify what our final form will look like and how many components we will have. I think doing the foamcore models was really important in how I could further develop my crutch. I focused more on making them compact and how to develop a sort of locking mechanism for the crutch.

This is a telescope-type crutch. In this picture, the handle slides up, but I didn't unlatch the extendable rod at the bottom, which also slides out aswell.

Here is my favorite model. It's a foldable model. I had to figure out a way to develop the locking mechanism for this one, which I think is pretty darn good. Also, I like the way the whole thing just folds out and "locks"

This last one incorporated both the fold and slide method. It's clunky. And I didn't develop any locking mechanism for this one.

Ideations

Ideation sketches for what type of crutch I wanted to design. If you look at some of them, they are far-fetched whilst others seem hilarious.

Once we whittled down the ideas that we wanted to focus on, our teacher wanted us to elaborate on those ideas and sketch them on big pieces of paper as seen in the pictures. Here are the before and after pictures up top and the final ideations that I did below. (I'm the second guy to the right of the pictures... also, you may notice how small our class is!)

After really figuring out what type of crutch I wanted to design, I ended up going for the collapsible type. We had to do at least 20+ pages of sketches. The sketches shown here are on 8.5x11 paper. During this time, I was focusing on how my crutch will become collapsible in terms of form. But at the same time I had to focus on how the user will interact with the crutch. I also had to figure out ways to make my crutch stable.

Rhino - 3D Modeling 1 - Spring 2009

Rhino Final

For my 3D Modeling final, we got to choose whatever object we wanted to work on. I chose the WowWee Moth which was a flying toy. It was fairly easy to recreate as it didnt' have a lot of curves to it. Rhino is a really fun program to use and it makes it easy for people that can't draw well (me) and put whatever they can envision into a modeling program.

Midterm - Popsicle Presentation, Final Model, and Process.

Presenting my Popsicle to the class. That's my 18x24 presentation board with my render of my popsicle! I decided not to post that up :P

Here I am wearing my popsicle around my neck. After my presentation, I decided to wear it around for a bit as the LED was lighting up. It was pretty cool!

This is my final model. I love the form that I created. I'm pretty much pleased with it.

The edibile part is made out of vitamin water... I forgot what flavor.

Design Problems: Manufacturing-wise, it may be expensive to create in terms of how the form is made... Also, it seems bulky as a necklace... BUT that was because I had to design my way around the LED itself. :]

This is the LED cover along with the necklace. I had to do a "Macgyver" and found my broken pair of headphones and cut the cord off so that I can make an actual necklace. hehe :D

This is my Renshape model. I wish I took pictures of this guy whilst using the dremel tool. It was really hard to shape and get the inside part to be hollow. You can also see some easysand on it as I went too far. The other picture is also in prepartion for the silicone moulding.

This would be my first time doing a silicone moulding for any of my projects. I wasn't in the class that taught it yet, but I got a lot of help from other students (now friends :) )who knew how to silicone mould. It wasn't easy to take my piece out... but I learned my lesson. The final models were made out of Instacast.

This is the LED cover. I was able to use styrene and get it lasercut on the laser cutter (which is awesome) and then I used my Renshape model as my form for heatforming the covers.

Now this is where the hard part came in. I thought I could use a two-part mould for creating the edible part of my popsicle, but I was wrong. So I had to do another silicone moulding for the popsicle. But when I took my first popsicle out, it was brittle and broke! So, after waiting a long time, it worked. But I honestly thought that making the edible part of my popsicle would be easy.

Midterm - Popsicle Sketches and Process

Here are a few of my sketch pages (out of 70 pages!) that I did for my Popsicle project.

Also, more pictures of my sketch models and a render of one of my sketch models showing how my popsicle should be used. This project focused on User Interaction.

This random sketch was helpful on how the popsicle handle would be held around the neck as a necklace.

Funny render, but the orange part was supposed to be clear whilst a light was emanating through it.

Sketches to hold my Popsicle handle up when it is being used as a necklace. Also, I had to work around the form of the LED. You'll see how I managed to work with it during my final model.

I initially wanted to design my model this way, but I ran into problems such as where to incorporate the LED light and how the edible part of my Popsicle will be held into place and also how the necklace will be incorporated alongside my Popsicle handle.

Spring 2009 Update

I finally finished my third semester at AAU and It was pretty fun. So, now I have the time to post some of my work and processes up, especially for my Product Design 1 class which was really awesome. I managed to learn A LOT this semester and figured out where my strengths and weaknesses lie. Also, the Mill, Lathe and Laser Cutter at my school's workshop are the most awesomest machines ever.

Cash Register Midterm

- The premise behind this midterm was to help us identify the values of rounded corners in products and objects. The Cash Register that our teacher made us render for our current Midterm is really well-rounded, so to speak. I just actually did this today and decided to take pictures of my progress on it... I should've just scanned it, but I couldn't bother. I will probably scan it when I'm done with it. This is on 14"x17" marker paper and we're using markers now!

- First off, our teacher made us sketch and render cubes with rounded edges and values 1,2,&3 in mind. We had to render 36 rounded cubes. The ones that I posted up are the ones that I was working on after we had the critique. My teacher said that my cubes were too light in value, so I darkened these four with marker first. And then I showed him if my values were correct, but then he showed the class how to apply nupastel, highlights, and how to use a carbon pencil to get crisp lines on it on these four cubes. I honestly thought that my darkened cubes were great at first, but then after seeing how to get a better gradient with the new material, I pretty much like the end result. I like the parting lines that he did on two of the cubes, btw.

- Here are my sketches from life that I first did of the cash register. I used the last one as my line drawing for my final render.

- These are the pictures of the cash register that I had to take for reference material as the building that it was housed in was closed over spring break. I decided to post these guys on the wall so that I wouldn't have to scan through them if they were on the table.

- These were done a week before to show to my teacher and show him if we understood values. If you compared this to the work that my classmates had up, you would skip by it. My teacher told me that I needed darker values on it as it was very light.

- Here is a picture of the line sketch that would be my basis for my render. You can see the smaller drawing on the top right, which is my original copy of what I drew of the cash register. I call it Sketching FOR Life... instead of From, hehe :)

- To be honest, I was working on the base of the register for like an hour or so. I know, it's a waste of marker ink, but I was picky and also I didn't know how dark my values should've been.

- This is what I finished up with for the day. (Prismacolor marker for reference to how big my render is.)

- I finished the render for my cash register the following day. What I added after I was finished with the markers was a black prismacolor pencil to darken some areas and add some line weight around some needed areas. It made it look pretty nice, actually. I also decided to waste my 10% marker and shade a table for it to sit on. You can see the little shadow coming out on the left side. And the white parts that you see on the cash register are the presumed "highlights" which I used "pro-white" for. I don't think I rendered the buttons perfectly, but hopefully the viewer will get the idea that there are buttons on the cash register. Also, I decided to alter the number that was shown, which was originally "00.02" to "00.42"... Anyone awesome enough can guess why I did that :)

Popsicle Project

Working Model & Refined Sketches

In my previous post, I introduced you my current Product Design 1 project, which is based around designing a popsicle. In this post, I will show you my new model and some sketches (which I will post up later).

- After going through another batch of sketches (10 full 8.5"x11" pages). This time around, the designs that I made were significantly different from my first batch. (I will have to show you some of the sketches as soon as I scan them!)

- After those sketches, my teacher helped my out with really defining my product. I finally chose to incorporate LEDs into my product and also turning my product into a necklace after the user has eaten their popsicle.

- These are pictures of the working model that I made. Compared to the previous pictures of the sketch models, I've really refined where I wanted my product to go in terms of form and aesthetics.

- BUT. After receiving my critique from my class, they helped me realised that this wasn't my final form. They all agreed that the shape was nice, but wanted it to be smaller. (The only reference that I can give you guys is that that's 8.5"x11" paper.) The thing was that it would be too big to be used as a necklace. Ergonomics wise, it felt really good in the hand.

- But back to the working model itself, you can see the LED inside of it, which I held in place through a hole on top. My teacher wanted me to include the shape of the edible part of the popsicle, which really wasn't on my mind at the time that I was making this.

- You can also see a thin film of orange PVC which I wrapped around the front of my object.

- Also, the black beads attached to it would be the necklace part.

- I honestly thought that I was finished with my form, but I ran into problems...

How do I incorporate my necklace into my popsicle handle without it having to dangle around whilst the user was eating their popsicle?
How small should it be?
The biggest problem was having to design my popsicle around an LED and to include a way on how to turn it on and off.
What materials would I use for the final form and what processes would I have to go through to do it?

- So Yeah. I will post up the sketches that I did which led me to this form, soon. And also, I will post up my FINAL-FINAL form (which I'm actually proud of) and the process pics for it, because I have been taking a lot of them.

Popsicle Project

Sketch Models & Initial Sketches

- The next project that we are currently doing for Product Design 1 is a Popsicle project, which is our Midterm project.

- We had to come up with Target Market and Inspiration boards. (I will post them up later)

- I chose my target market to be clubbers/ravers who love listening to EDM (Electronic Dance Music).

- And so my "Problem Statement" is How do I entice these clubbers/ravers into liking the popsicle that I have designed for them?

- I started thinking of ideas and how my Target Market will interact with my product.

- Then I figured that they should love lights!

- I've come up with MANY "thinking" sketches and "refined" sketches for my idea. (I will post those up later)

- I was really surprised at the many designs that I came up with. At first, my thought process was stuck on my product as being a hand-held... which it is... and so I drew grips and handle-like features on my initial designs. After presenting my first batch of sketches (20 full 8.5"x11" pages) to my class, I realised that my product didn't necessarily have to be a big handle with a popsicle attached to it.

- Finally, you may be wondering what these are. These are my sketch models that I had to show to my class so that they would understand my idea for my product.

- I used the lathe to create something random with foam and then attached a glowstick on top. I was thinking about having my popsicle glow, but I figured that it would be awkward to eat something that was glowing... yet cool!

- This one is made out of foamcore, which I cutout holes into so that the lights from the LED could shine out of it.

- This is the same idea as the previous model but the holes are only on one side, and also I've added grips, which is clay.

Product Design 1 - First Project - Spring 2009

Product Design 1

-This is the first project that we had to do on the first day of class. We were given random objects. The items that I got were: A toilet paper holder, steak sticks, a sponge, and a pack of screws with hinges on them.

- We then had come up with what we could use the random items for. The object of the project was to make a sort of hand-held device. I think I didn't hear my teacher say that though because I opted to go for a clock!

*** The story behind this clock was that the hour and minute hands would be separated. Unlike in traditional clocks, where both hour and minutes are together.

- I took the toilet paper holder apart and that's how I was able to get the two cylinders. Inside was a spring. I chose to go for aesthetics, so to speak, and use the spring to represent movement.

-The sponge was round to begin with, but I basically pulled it apart and was able to add color to the cylinders, which were originally white.

- The steak sticks were then used as my minute and hour hands. And the screws were to help justify the time. And then I used the toilet paper handle's packaging as a base to hold the two cylinders together.

- We were then given a week until our next class to make a presentation board for our project. We had to include a in-hand use of our object, which was considerably hard because this was a clock. An orthographic view of our object. And a render of it. I decided to use colored pencils, but I wasn't able to get my desired shading on it. Overall though, I learned quite a bit from this project during my critique. Hehe.

Form Development - Fall 2008

Form Development was the most arduous class that I've gone through whilst at AAU. We were taught a new process involving fibreglass, clay, surface coat, and anything that was expensive. And we basically took the whole semester to make the object that we designed.

I chose to do a bathroom faucet for the class. But seriously, you should've seen my first sketch of the faucet that I wanted to do. It was a farcry from what I ended up with and I have to thank my teacher for dissuading me from doing it. I'm actually proud of the final product that I presented and a lot of hardwork was done to make it look nice. And I give credit to my teacher, again, for suggesting that I present my faucet with a sink. I also designed the sinktop and used the lasercutter to get the shape.

--I have a lot of "glamour" pics of my faucet...

- We had to use foam to help us create the templates that we needed for when we started on clay. The same ideas from Model Making 1 were used here, with the center line to help us justify the symmetry of our object.

- After coming up with our final form, we separated the foam pieces with bestine and then made a template of the cutout with styrene. (We used epoxy to stick the template on there and screwed nails in so that the clay wouldn't move during the shaping process).

- We then used MDF and made 1" grids and used shellac so that the clay that we used wouldn't stick to the MDF.

- We then did the craziest thing in the world and cut our foam object into 1" pieces. Afterwards, we used the inside of each piece to create the curve for the template, which will help as a guide for when we start shaping our objects with clay.

- The packing process for the clay was hard. This isn't the usual clay that people would use because it had to be warmed up so that it would be pliable. We had to take chunks at a time when we applied the clay onto our board because once it got cooled down, it would be hard to pack.

- Also, it was easier to trim the clay off once it was cooled down because it would peel off like like an apple peeler does to an apple.

-This is my initial clay form (It looked horrible in the beginning). But as you can see, the templates that I had cut before were helpful in getting my objects shape down. But what I found hard to do was getting the curve between the two templates to be perfect. I should have done my grid at 1/2" instead of 1".

- Here is my final shape on clay. It was a tedious process, and getting the clay smooth nearly drove me insane.

- We had to apply this green protective film with a spraygun, which would help us extract the fibreglass that we would apply to it afterwards.

- The white stuff that's on the first picture is surface coat. It was used as a thin barrier for when we had to do a second application of our final fibreglass object.

-The second and third are pictures of the first layer of fibreglass. We had to brush on a this thin coat (forgot the name) which enabled the fibreglass to stick onto the surface.

- After that, we had to apply this two-part dough which would make our fibreglass mould strong enough so that it wouldn't break when we did our final fibreglass application of our object. As you can see in the last two photos, the board became bulky after the two-part dough and more fibreglass.

- Skipping ahead, we cleaned the excess fibreglass from the edges so that we wouldn't get hurt from it during our moulding application of our objects.

- Here, you can see the green tint that we had applied earlier on the clay, but instead we had to apply it again onto the inside of our mould.

-We did the same application with the surface coat and fibreglass so that we could finally get our FINAL object from the mould.

- After gluing and adding the needed easysand (bondo) I primed my object then applied a HEAVY coat of guidecoat. (I honestly went crazy with it, which was a bad idea because I had to sand it all off!)

- Finally done, I chose to give my object a gray-ish blue color.

- This is my final presentation board for my object and the final presentation of my faucet with a sink. I chose to use a sink in lieu of making my object work.

Materials & Process - Fall 2008

In this class, we dealt with the whole slew of the manufacturing process of many different things. It helps us prepare for how we would make the things that we design.

This is the final that we had to do. We got to choose our own object and dismantle it and figure out the processes such as how it was made, the joining process, material specifications, etc. I did mine on my electric shaver and chose to mount the pieces on mirrored acrylic because I really wanted people to see the inside of each part.

Digital Imaging 1 - Fall 2008

In this class we got to learn how to use Photoshop, Illustrator, and Painter.

For our final, we got to choose whatever we wanted to design, so I decided to design a projector watch. I didn't go out on the details on the page with useful callouts and more sketches. Also, we got to design logos for ourselves. The logo on the top left was originally created when I was in highschool and so I may be using it as my logo for the rest of my life. And the logo on the bottom left was derived from the other logo. :)

The whole premise of Design Drawing 1 was to understand black and white values on basic shapes. The homework for the class took up most of my time. But I honestly learned a lot and I've applied my knowledge from this class into everything now.

Apart from the basic objects, I believe that the vignette was the only way to be creative with our compositions. The vignettes were to have a smooth gradient to them, but I chose to be a rebel by applying nupastel in a diagonal fashion. My teacher ended up calling it the "Rainy" vignette. I don't know if she liked it, but then honestly, it sort of became my signature, so to speak, because anyone in my class that saw my vignette would automatically know that I made the composition without looking for the name.

Design Problem Solving - Spring 2008

I don't have pictures of my water pump that I made for this class. Even though It did really good! :D

- Here is the first semi-project that helped up with our bridge project. It's made out of railroad board and rubber cement. I believe it was 15inches tall and we were constrained with a certain length of board to use for each tower (Sorry, I forgot how much). I chose to go with these two designs for my towers hoping that it would carry a lot more weight than the usual triangle/circle combo. Other than that, I prefer the shape on the left the most.

______

- So this is the bridge that I made for our bridge project. I wanted to go for an inverted arch even though my teacher advised me not to. So I had to persuade him with a way to make sure that the arch won't break immediately under pressure. So that's why there's a smaller arch between it in hopes that it would weigh down against the inverted arch. Scientific words should be used here, but I honestly don't know them. When it came time to put weights on, my bridge failed horribly! I ended up putting 45 pounds on the guy. But I believe the low weight was due to the fact that I glued the center parts together the night before, so there was no time for the whole piece to dry.

- Here is my dreaded music box. Enough said. HAHA. It's very simple and sketchy. We were suppose to make sound from something, so I just used the simple fishing line with metal rods to pluck it. The device was turn around by a motor and inside I place a crosspiece with nuts and lemonheads inside to provide a beat to the melody that was playing on the fishing line.

- This is my sumobot. It was run by two motors and the premise was to push your opponent off of a board with your bot. It had a sensor in the front which made it back up so that it wouldn't fall off the board. I used nuts and lemonheads to weigh the guy down. I thought it was cute, but the poor guy got gutted, hehe.

Model Making - Spring 2008

- Initial form for my teapot done in foam.

- This is supposed to be a mini-mock up of the bigger version

-We used Instacast and glued the two pieces together with epoxy.

- Afterwards, I sanded and added a real lifesaver named Bondo.

- As you can see in this picture, I added A LOT of bondo, I realised that the spherical shape that I desired on the front part wasn't to my liking. Also, you can see a little triangular shape in the picture which is going to be my "lid" for my teapot and is also made fully out of bondo.

- I believe I had to go through three (3) coats of primer before I was able to finally paint my teapot. I honestly was in a hurry, but I learned my lesson! I actually like how the sunlight comes out in these pictures.

- This is my final teapot color. I originally chose the mint green color that you see on the smaller teapot, but then I changed my mind to go with a sunburst orange color. Also, I didn't want my lid to be the same color as my teapot so I chose a simple black. Overall, I believe my teapot turned out really nice. :)

I'm currently a Third Semester student at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. I just recently started this blog since I've seen many students show their work throughout the semester on other sites. So I will post the work that I've done throughout my time at AAU.
